Rock Oil 124: High Performance Rock cutting Oil

ID Rock Oil 124 is a moderately refined mineral oil with a flash point of 325°F. While clear, it is not food-grade, and that’s on purpose. In order to meet food-grade certification, more refining is required. The result is almost zero properties remain for drawing heat from the blade/rock contact point. Also, no anti-particulate suspension is required as an edible product. Finally, lubricity properties are minimalized - or virtually everything necessary for an excellent rock cutting oil. If you factor in the more than adequate viscosity for providing smooth surface contact tension, ID Rock Oil 124 will definitely satisfy both the beginner and experienced rock cutter alike.

We have in-depth knowledge of oils and their respective applications, and all safety information is available in our Safety Data Sheet. For other saw and blade-related questions, consult your saw and blade manufacturers.

Facts about Rock Cutting Oil

There's a lot happening between a rock and the saw blade. Let's clear up some misconceptions and ensure you have the rock-solid facts you need.

Are All Rock Cutting Oils the Same?

Founder’s message

Since 1954, ID Corporation has been an independent compounder and blender of industrial lubricants formulated for the needs of specific job applications. Whether you’re new at rock cutting  or a seasoned veteran, choosing the right oil is important to both your blade and your saw.

Navigating the Information Overload

I frequently receive questions about oil properties and the impact on the cutting experience or specific application.  Often, this confusion stems from conflicting information from friends, enthusiasts, salespeople, and even social media "experts."

  • Rock cutting is a creative process, and everyone develops their own techniques over time. What works for one person might not be ideal for another. However, basing your decisions on facts (over tradition or opinion) is essential for achieving consistent success.

Here's a relatable story that illustrates this point:

A newlywed daughter asked her mother the secret of her famous pot roast. By rote, her mom began “Begin with a roast of exactly 6 lbs and cut it into two equal sized pieces.” Her daughter questioned those specific requirements. Her mother laughingly explained that at time she owned only one pot, 6lbs was required to feed the family, and to make it fit her pot required cutting the roast into two equal sized pieces.

  • There are misconceptions about rock cutting oils. Let's compare them to white flour.

Scientifically, whole wheat flour offers more nutritional value than refined white flour. Milling removes the bran and germ, reducing nutrients with each step. Highly refined flour is beautiful and easy to use, but lacks nutritional value.

  • Crude oil undergoes various refining processes to create different products. One key step is removing harmful hydrocarbons and toxins. Further refining removes specific properties, potentially resulting in a clear, food-grade mineral oil considerably lacking in substantive lubrication properties.

So, how does this relate to rock cutting? While food-safe oil might prevent rust, it offers few lubricating benefits and little protection for your saw or blade.

Some Key Questions To Consider When Choosing A Rock Cutting Oil Source

  • How does the oil benefit my rock saw and blade?

  • Why are some oils amber while others are clear?

  • Do I need a clear oil? Does it attract fines better?

  • What is the oil's flash point compared to kerosene?

  • What's the cutting temperature of the rock I'm working with?

  • Who manufactures the oil, and from where is it sourced?

  • Does the seller actually blend the oil, or simply repackage another brand's product?

  • Does the seller have in-depth knowledge of the product they're selling?

  • Have I reviewed the oil's safety data sheet (SDS) and understand its contents?
